Ever wondered how an HSBC Life (UK) National Account Manager spends their day? Claire Bostock takes us through her busy and varied role.

My day starts with a cuddle with my son before he goes to school. He’s the youngest of my four children, so we’re now very competent at the school routine! By 9am, I’ll be well on my way to an event or roadshow either in the car or on the train. I live in Cheshire and spend a fair bit of my week travelling up and down the country, although my official ‘patch’ is the North of England and Northern Ireland.

If I’m attending an event, I might be introducing an industry expert, hosting a panel debate or keynote speaking myself.  The two keynotes I’m most proud of are my speech on menopause for the Women in Protection Awards 2024 and my presentation on the additional skills that working parents bring to the table for the 2023 Women’s Recognition Awards. They are two topics that I’m extremely passionate about, and I think that the more comfortable people are hearing and talking about them, the better. That way, we can keep improving things for women in business. Hosting events and roadshows is my favourite part of the job and I use a storytelling format, as if I’m talking to a friend. I do get nervous, but I get a real dopamine rush at the end – and I usually get lots of positive feedback from the audience. Personal stories are best because they build trust, but if you don’t have experiences of your own to share, you can use someone else’s.

I also check in with my distribution partners – these relationships are so important. My tip for maintaining good relationships is to have genuine interest in and curiosity about people and their lives – people like it when you ask authentic questions, and it tends to be reciprocated. I keep in touch with colleagues in other areas of the business throughout the day, such as our Product and Pricing team and our award-winning Claims and Underwriting team.¹

I’ll relax on my journey home by listening to a podcast. If I’m not presenting or networking at a protection event, by 7pm I’ll either be taking my dog for a walk or chauffeuring my kids to their sporting and social activities.  

I’m so grateful for the variety in my role. I love that I’m not desk-bound and that no two days are the same. There really is no such thing as a typical day!
